Gurupurabs and Sikh Calendar 20-2021
Sikh Calender

A complete list of Gurpurabs in 20-2021 is given on this page. The important days associated with Sikh gurus are called ‘Gurpurab’. The literal meaning of the word Gurpurab is ‘day associated with Guru‘ and it is made of two words Guru and Purb.

Many people outside Punjab assume the Birthday of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji as the meaning of Gurpurab. It includes the birthdays (Parkash Utsav or Prakash Diwas), Gurgadi Diwas, and Jyoti-Jot day of 10 Gurus. Birthday of some bhagats, whose teachings are included in Guru Granth Sahib, are also celebrated. The days associated with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji like Sampuranta Diwas, First Parkash Day, and Gurgadi Diwas are also celebrated.

Sikh history is full of martyrs. Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Teg Bahdar Ji, Char Sahibzade, Mata Gujjri Ji, and a large number of Sikhs have sacrificed their lives for the good. The pages of history from the beginning of Sikhism to recent times are full of bravery and sacrifices. Shaheedi Diwas (martyrdom day) of great martyrs and days of some great historic events like Khalsa Sajna Diwas are also observed.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurpurab

The Parkash Diwas or birthday Gur Purab of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born in 1666 at Patna Sahib, Bihar. Guru Gobind Singh Ji is termed as Sant Sipahi (Saint & Soldier) who founded the Khalsa Panth to stand against the atrocities and forced conversions by Muslim rulers. He sacrificed his whole family for humanity.
