Puli pongal / Tamarind Pongal

Puli means ‘Tamarind’ and Pongal is mashed up rice.  Puli Pongal is made with broken raw rice and tamarind

Ingredients:

  • Rice 1 cup
  • Tamarind one small cup
  • Urad Dal 1/2 Tsp
  • Channe Dal 1/2 Tsp
  • Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Red Chillies 2
  • Curry leaves few
  • Hing a pinch
  • Turmeric powder a pinch
  • Salt

Method:

  • Grind the raw rice so it gets broken and keep it aside.

  • Soak tamarind in hot water and squeeze out the tamarind juice. Tamarind water should be twice the rice portion.

  • Now heat ghee in a cooker and add mustard seeds and let it splutter after it adds urad dal, channa dal, red chilies, asafoetida powder, and curry leaves.

  • After frying the masala add the rice and tamarind juice, turmeric powder, and salt and mix well now cover the cooker and cook for 2 whistles. Rice should not be overcooked and taste great with raita.
