National Education Day – 11 November
National Education Day is celebrated on 11th November in India, the Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a great freedom fighter, eminent educationist, and the first Union Minister of Education. He engineered the inclusion of Muslims in the freedom struggle and even brought states of North India to join the cause.
Commonly known as Maulana Azad was born on 11th November 1888 in Mecca his real name was Sayyid Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al Hussaini. His father was a scholar who lived in Delhi. Maulana Azad was a scholar as well as a poet proficient in several languages such as Arabic, English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian, and Bengali.
He was a great independence activist and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress who oppose the partition of India and Pakistan. During his tenure as education minister from 15th August until 2nd February 1958, he established a national education system. He foresaw a great future in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and laid the foundation of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna in 1992 for his invaluable contribution to the nation.
Since 11 September 2008, the minister of Human Resource Development decided to commemorate his birthday on November 11th as National Education Day. All educational institutions in the country celebrate this day as National Education Day to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Schools and colleges organize seminars, symposia, essay writing competitions, elocution competitions, workshops, and rallies with banners, cards, and slogans on the importance of education and the nation’s commitment to all aspects of education.
