History of International Student’s Day

International Student’s Day commemorates two important events in modern history. In 1939 there was a riot by university students which was suppressed by the Nazi security forces. The Nazi troops had even closed all the Czech colleges and universities. The courage displayed by the students during this incident was unforgettable. In connection with it, a commemorative gathering of students was planned in 1989. But it turned into an anti-regime demonstration and the overthrow of the communist regime in former Czechoslovakia.

On 17 November 1939, the Germans targeted Czech students in response to anti-Nazi demonstrations which were held in Prague. The turbulent events not only inspired the creation of International Students’ Day but are also inextricably linked to the beginning of the Velvet Revolution 50 years later.

To commemorate their legacy, since 1941, students from all parts of the world started celebrating November 17 as International Students Day. Over the years, it has grown into an observance of students all over, encouraging activism and honoring their multicultural diversity.
