How To Dress Your Child As Krishna And Radha

Janmashtami is one of the major festivals of India when people celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna on Ashtami or eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapad (August–September). Also know as Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti, Ashtami Rohini, Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, and Gokulashtami.

Raslilas and Dahi Handi events are organized at various places to depict the life of Lord Krishna. Children enjoy dressing as Krishna and Radha known as Bal Gopal or Kanha and Radhika’s.

If you are also thinking of dressing your child as Krishna or Radha here are some tips which would be helpful for you.

Dress for Krishna

1. Yellow and Red dhoti

Lord Krishna always wears a yellow dhoti so yellow dhoti becomes an essential element for the attire of the baby. Nowadays you can get ready-made dhoti from the market which need not be tied, you can just have your child wear it like a pant.

You can buy a complete dhoti kurta set which will make your job easy. A lot of vibrant color dresses are available in the market which is just ready-to-wear.

2. Stole

A stole in silk or satin is also an essential part of the costume, which can either be carried around the child’s shoulder or tied around his waist. You can also tie the stole around the baby’s head.

3. Mor Mukut

Mor Mukut or a crown with peacock feather is a must for Krishan dress, you can either buy it from the market or make one from cardboard and golden paper. Peacock feather or mor pankh is a must for Krishna crown.

4. Flute or Bansuri

The flute adds finishing touch to the Krishna costume you can buy a simple flute and decorate it with silver and gold lace.

5. Jewelry

Krishna is a prince so make your child look the same. Use artificial jewelry or make your own ornaments from shiny fabric. You will need a long pearl necklace, baju band, kangans, earrings, and Payal.

6. Matki

Lord Krishna loves makan so after dressing your child place a matki filled with butter or cotton which will give the illusion of butter. You can decorate the matki with a small mirror and lace.

7. Make-up

In make-up a tilak on the forehead is needed to give a full look of Lord Krishna, no more make-up should be done which will harm the delicate skin of the baby.

Dress for Radha

1. Lehenga

A Lehenga choli or ghagra is a must for dressing as Radha, You can use any occasion lehenga your daughter have or if planning to buy one from the market go for Rajasthani or Gujarati style.

2. Jewelry

Either artificial or flower jewelry will look good on children’s, you can use flowers for hairs too. You can use earing, necklace, mang tikka, bangles, and pajeb as jewelry.

3. Mataka

A small earthenware or Matka decorated with silver or golden laces is a perfect accessory for your little Radha.

Tips to take care of child safety

1. Make sure whatever you are using jewelry, stole or anything in a dress doesn’t choke your child.

2. The costume should fit and not too loose and should be of non-irritable fabric.

3. Avoid small parts like pearls and beads which child may easily swallow.

4. Don’t go overboard with accessories adopt the mantra ‘less is more’.

5. Dress your baby if he is comfortable in it don’t force, else you will spoil not only your baby mood but yours too.
