Guru Arjan Dev was the fifth of the ten total Sikh Gurus. He compiled the first official edition of the Sikh scripture called the Adi Granth, which later expanded into the Guru Granth Sahib which is the eleventh and eternal Guru of Sikhs. Guru Arjan Dev was the first martyr of the Sikh faith, he sowed the seed of martyrdom which flourished after him and became the heritage of the Sikh People. The martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji became a watershed moment for the Sikhs.

He founded Tarn Taran Sahib in the Year 1590 and the digging of the tank (Sarovar) started. When the tank was completed it was the biggest and largest tank in the whole of Panjab. He compiled the Guru Granth Sahib in 1604 and built Golden Temple. He started the practice of daswandh (tithe) – contributing one-tenth of one’s earnings for community purposes. Guru Sahib showed that a Sikh should live in dignity and die with honor and that a Sikh should never tolerate insult or oppression.
