World Emoji Day – 17 July

World Emoji Day – 17 July

World Emoji Day is celebrated on July 17 every year. The date was chosen by Emojipedia due to the Calendar emoji on iOS showing this date. Emojis have actually been used since the beginning of the internet however their popularity has increased on a massive scale with the modern-day smartphone having then built into our messaging dashboards, well-known emoji merchandise on sale around the world and even an emoji movie is made in honor of them.

World Emoji Day was founded in 2014 by Jeremy Burge, who is also the founder of Emojipedia, an emoji reference website. The World Emoji Day website says about choosing July 17, “This is the date that iCal for Mac was first announced at MacWorld Expo in 2002. We now use this for World Emoji Day.

Emojis emerged from emoticons – and along with other forms of paralanguage such as all caps for shouting – in the dark days of Nokia 3310s, bulletin board systems, and internet relay chat. With digital text, suddenly we could write quick, impulsive messages and expect quick, impulsive responses.

To celebrate the tiny characters that forever changed the way we communicate and have invaded our text messages, emails, and social media. They have a language, which actually can be more specific than words. It started as an online holiday and now here it is, in the real world. With the tap of a button, we can use a digital shorthand to convey a level of emotion that plain text just can’t match.

Along with smileys and love hearts, there are 3,304 emojis in the Unicode Standard – including sequences for gender and skin tone – and there’s no sign of slowing down with new emojis released regularly following a strict approvals process.

The old saying “a picture tells a thousand words” has never been more true. Five billion emojis are sent daily on Facebook Messenger and 900 million messages are sent using emojis with no text at all.

The explosion in popularity of the pictograms meant that representing different cultures and religions has always been a key issue for the Unicode Consortium, a group of technology firms that decides which new emojis to add each year.

To celebrate the day the Empire state building gets lit yellow, crowds from all over the globe set a new Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people simultaneously dressed as emoji faces.

iOS 14 is including new Memoji customizations including revamped facial and muscle structure to make them even more expressive.

The new emojis include: > Dodo> Nesting Dolls> Pinata> Tamale> Pinched Fingers> Boomerang> Ninja> Coin> Anatomical Heart> Beaver> Transgender Symbol> Bubble Tea> Lungs.

This means users will have more ways to send a range of emotions and express themselves in Messages. There are also 11 new hairstyles, including man bun, top knot, simple side part, waves, and enhancements to fades, and new face coverings. The new headwear options will also let you show off your style, hobby, or profession with 19 new styles, including a durag, tichel, cyclist helmet, nurse cap, or swim cap.

Brands are generally laser-focused on assessing their reputations among the audiences they care most about. Emojis help you calibrate stakeholder sentiment in a different way. In fact, they can actually refine a company’s ability to correctly identify the sentiment of a tweet.

Emojis are more than cute and fun visuals. They provide an instant snapshot of a brand’s perception, resonance, and relevance in the marketplace so much so that they amount to a global, pictographic language.
