MDH or Mahashian Di Hatti Limited is a producer, distributor, and exporter of Indian spices and mixtures. They have a monopoly in the manufacture of spices with suitable food. The MDH Company was founded in 1919 by Mahashay Chunni Lal by opening a small shop in Sialkot. Since then, he is growing in the whole country, and his spices are also being exported to many countries.

History of Mahashay Dharampal Gulati

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati was born on 27 March 1923 in Sialkot (Pakistan) in British India. His father Mahashay Chunni Lal and Mataji Mata Chanan Devi were philanthropists and religious as well as followers of Arya Samaj. In 1933, he left school even before the 5th standard was completed.

In 1937, with the help of his father, he started various small businesses, like mirrors, soap, carpentry, trade rice, etc. But he could not last his business for long, so he began to help his father in his family business of spices. Earlier Mahashian Hi Hatti was known as “Degi Mirchi Wale“.

After the partition of the country, he returned to India and reached Delhi on 27 September 1947. At that time he had only 1500 rupees, out of which he bought a tanga of 650 rupees which he used to run on the route from Connaught place to Karol Bagh. Later he bought small wooden kiosks and started his family business and again brought up the name of Mahashian the Hatti of Sialkot “Degi Mirchi Wale“.

Mahashiya Di Hatti

With a humble beginning from a modest shop in Karol Bagh, Delhi, Dharampal Gulati laid the building blocks and the foundation of his future empire in the spice business, whose worth is multi-crore today and growing in value. With this business, he started to earn good money and within a span of 5 years, he started his second branch in Chandni Chowk (Delhi).

Then in 1954, he started with Roopak Stores India’s first modern Masala Store and later on handed that over to his younger brother Mr. Stapal Gulati. After that Mahashay thought to get into the manufacturing of spices and started his Masala factory know as Mahashian Di Hatti limited or MDH.

With the unwavering dedication, clear vision, and complete sincerity in business, Mahasaya’s business was beginning to touch the heights. Very few people know the hard work behind the success of Mahasayaji, they have made a lot of effort to illuminate the name of their brand MDH. And today the MDH brand dominates the spice with 12% in the Indian market and the second largest.

Mahashay has no secret of his huge success. They just followed the rules and regulations made in the business and followed the basic rule of providing the customers with good service and good quality products. He has taken care of his business as well as the customers in his life.

On November 1, 1975, after starting a small hospital of 10 beds in Arya Samaj, Subhash Nagar, New Delhi, he established a 20-bed hospital in January 1984 in Janakpuri, Delhi in memory of his mother, Chan Devi, who later developed having become a hospital spread over 5 acres of 300 beds. In this hospital, facilities were available like all the world-renowned hospitals, such as MRI, C.T. I.w.f. etc.

At that time, due to the lack of hospital facilities in western Delhi, this was not less than any boon for Western Delhi people. Mahashay used to visit his hospital daily and also took care of the activities happening in the hospital. At that time, the poor were treated free of charge in that hospital and even today the format is followed. They are given free medicines and annual money are also given.

Mahashay Dharampal helps the children, he established many schools and provided education to the children for free. He opened many multipurpose institutions, which mainly include MDH International School, Mahashay Chunnilal Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Mata Lilavati Kanya Vidyalaya, Mahashay Dharampal Vidya Mandir, etc.

He single-handedly established more than 20 schools to help poor children and society. Every day they spend some of their time with those poor children and the children also love them a lot. A person who does a business with crores of rupees even gets time to those poor children every day.

Today no one can imagine how many poor girls have been married due to them and today they are living their lives in happiness. We should thank him wholeheartedly for his kind assistance.

He has also talked to many social organizations for their help and the expenses of many poor girls are borne by them. Today, Mahashay Dharam Pal has taken responsibility for all the poor children who are living in their institutions, Mahashiji only spends his expenses from school fees to books and things that are needed.

They teach everyone the same religion without discriminating in religions and advise them to live with love and brotherhood. People of all communities live under his umbrella, which includes Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. He also celebrates festivals of all religions. Anything that divides religions, they oppose those things. Perhaps this would be the reason for his greatness and no charge behind him.

Mahashahi Dharampal’s philosophy says, “Give the world what you have best, and your best will come back automatically.”

We find this statement to be true and followed by him. Today the MDH in the world of spices is called the king. They not only produce spices but also produce good things in society. He has established many hospitals, schools, and institutions. Today, in the country, every child knows the MDH brand.

MDH company is selling more than 40 products in more than 100 countries. The ingredients used to make this spice come from Kerala, Karnataka, and different parts of India. Some material is also sourced from Iran and Afghanistan.

The result of the hidden hard work behind the success of MDH is that at the age of 79, Dharam Pal Ji became the highest-earning FMCG CEO in India in 2014.

Mahashay went on to become India’s highest-paid consumer product CEO in 2017. He was actively involved in the functioning of the company, even in his old age, and took daily rounds to the factories, markets, and the company. He held an 80 percent stake in the company.

Mahashay was honored with the third-highest civilian honor of the country, the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in 2019.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati who is called the King of Spices breathed his last on 5.30 in the morning of 3 December 2020.

We believe that this contribution of Mahashaji will prove to be important in the development of the country and the poor in the country. They will surely be the inspirations of the present entrepreneurs. Surely Mahasaji is worthy of this honor, we should respect his contribution.
