International Youth Day (IYD)

International Youth Day (IYD) is celebrated on 12th August every year to recognize and draw attention to youth issues worldwide. The aim of International Youth Day is to endorse consciousness among the youth. The development of a country is strongly based on youth progress, this day gives an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voices, actions, and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement.

The Focal Point on Youth selects a theme for the day with input from youth organizations and members of the UN Inter-Agency Network in Youth development. There are Programmes held to encourage youth around the world to organize activities to raise awareness about the situation of youth in their country. ‘National Youth Day ‘ is celebrated every year on 12 January in India which is also the birthday of Swami Vivekananda.

The Theme for International Youth Day 2021 is “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.

History of International Youth Day

The 54/120 resolution was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, following the recommendations made during the Youth World Conference on 17 December 1999 and announced to celebrate August 12 each year as International Youth Day. International Youth Day was started for the first time in 2000.

Youth 2030: The United Nations Youth Strategy was launched in 2018 that seeks to strengthen and increase commitments at the global, regional, and national levels to meet young people’s needs, help them realize their rights, and recognize their positive contributions as agents of change. This strategy is based on lessons learned from youth programs around the world, stresses the need to engage young people so they can more meaningfully contribute to the work of the United Nations, and seeks to ensure the UN can benefit from their views, insights, and ideas.

In the whole world, India is called the country of youth. In India, more than 50% of youth under 25 years of age and more than 65% of those under 35 years of age are young. There is a need today to give the youth power of our country proper guidance and make them partners in the progress of the country, to make good values, proper education and technological experts in them, to protect them from bad habits like intoxication, gambling, violence, etc. Because character building is the ultimate essential for the progress of the country, society.
