Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon (ऐ मेरे वतन के लोगों), is an Indian patriotic song. It is sung live by Lata Mangeshkar on 26 January 1963 at the National Stadium in New Delhi. The song was composed by C. Ramchandra and the lyrics were written by Kavi Pradeep. Kavi Pradeep was inspired to write the lyrics of this song as a tribute to those soldiers who had died defending the country during the Sino-Indian war in 1962.
Lata Mangeshkar performed the song live for the first time at a function in the presence of President Sarvapali Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of Republic Day. Nehruji was so overwhelmed by the song that he said, “Those who are not inspired by the song Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon, are not the real Indians.
The song has garnered praise from all over the country and became a signature tune of our Independence Day celebration. Recently this song has been replaced in place of ‘Abide With Me‘ hymn for the Beating Retreat ceremony. ‘Abide With Me’ was one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite Christian hymns and every year it was part of the Beating Retreat ceremony is held on January 29. But now the song Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon will be played as this song has a far wider connect with the people of India.
