Boss’s day

Boss’s day is observed on 16th October every year, and if it falls on a weekend then it is celebrated on the day nearest to 16th October. Whether you have a boss, manager, or are actually one yourself, Boss’s Day is a day to celebrate the achievements of your boss show how much you appreciate them.

They are there for you through thick and thin. With a positive attitude, inspiring work ethic, and challenging goals, your boss makes coming to work every day feel less like a job and more like a joy. The purpose of the holiday is for employees to show bosses appreciation for all the hard work and dedication they put into their jobs.

Boss’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, India, Australia, and South Africa, and provides an opportunity for employees to show appreciation for what their boss has done for them and the team with a recognition gift this Boss’s Day.

History

Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary from Deerfield, Illinois, originated National Boss Day in 1958 in honor of her white-collar father, who helped all of his children with good advice throughout their careers. Inspired by her father as she watched him successfully run the company despite all challenges he faced, Patricia decided that she wanted to do something that would both honor him and motivate his employees at the same time. In honor of the elder Haroski’s birthday – October 16 – Patricia registered the day with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

She created the holiday to create better relationships between employees and their supervisors and ever since folks have been sending cards to their bosses every year. Four years later, National Boss Day was backed by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner who officially proclaimed the day in 1962. The idea quickly became popular across the country and is now even observed in England, Australia, Canada, Ireland, India, Egypt, and South Africa.

On Boss’s Day, it’s not really necessary to give a gift — but it helps. Employees who frequently get ahead at work (with either good or bad bosses) are those who know how to “manage up”. But it wasn’t until Hallmark started producing National Boss Day cards in 1979 that the holiday took on a whole new form. Today, the company produces dozens of different cards ranging from professional to humorous, specifically to male or female bosses, or from an individual or group.

However, every good boss knows that celebrating Boss’s Day isn’t just about receiving gifts and feeling appreciated. It should really be about showing that appreciation back and meeting the expectations that your team has set for you as a business leader.

Bosses and employees have a special relationship that needs to be fostered properly – a relationship that should be celebrated all year long, not just on Employee Appreciation Day or National Boss’s Day. Boss’s Day has become a fun office holiday that allows employees to show their appreciation for all their bosses does for them.
