There are many ways that people practice their faith and religion, but the 6 most widely practiced religions of the world are Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, and Sikhism. The day is your chance to share your culture and your faith, and take the time to learn from others about theirs.
This year in 2024 World Religion Day falls on Sunday 21st of January.
History of World Religion Day
To affirm the beauty, love, and peace of all the world’s religions is the purpose of World Religion Day, established by the Bahá’is of the United States in 1950. World Religion Day aims to promote understanding and peace between all religions, encouraging people to learn about other faiths and their followers. Though initiated in the United States, World Religion Day has come to be celebrated internationally.
It first started as the “World Peace Through World Religion” forum in 1947 but was officially standardized and named “World Religion Day” in 1949. In 1950, the Baha’i holiday crossed borders and started being celebrated internationally. Since 1950, it has always been observed on the third Sunday of January annually. Their intention in announcing the day, and establishing its celebration, was to increase understanding of, and respect for, the many different religions and spiritual traditions that exist.
They hoped to promote peace between people individually and collectively through increasing understanding and respect between them. Given that religions and spiritual traditions play such a significant role, directly and indirectly, in shaping the cultures and societies. Which in turn shape our view of the world and of what is meaningful and ethical, individually and collectively.
World Religion Day seeks to emphasize the similarities between these religions. It hopes to encourage mature conversations about the role that religion has played in uniting people globally. The purpose of World Religion Day is to highlight the idea that the spiritual principles underlying the world’s religions are harmonious, and that religions play a significant role in unifying humanity.
As stated in Baha’i scripture: ” religion should be the cause of love and agreement, a bond to unify all mankind for it is a message of peace and goodwill to man from God,”. “Religion is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein.”
