Kargil Vijay Diwas – July 26

Kargil Vijay Diwas – July 26

Kargil Vijay Diwas is the great day when our brave soldiers successfully take back command of the outpost which was captured by Pakistan.

Kargil is a border town in the Ladakh region of J&K, and the Pakistani army intruded on the borderline (LOC) and occupied the posts.  On May 3rd, 1999, a shepherd reported intrusion by Pakistani soldiers in Kargil. By May 10 Pakistani soldiers reached Dras, Kaksar, and Mushkoh sectors.

In winters Indian soldiers retreated from their mountain posts to lower regions and the Pakistani army took advantage of it. Pakistani soldiers very easily, however, in the guise of mujahideen, entered the Indian side and occupied some of our posts overlooking NH1. NH1 is the only link between India and Kashmir which could easily be blocked sitting from the heights of Kargil.

India in reply launched a counter-attack named “Operation Vijay“. Backed by the Indian air force, the Indian army regained some of the posts that Pakistan has occupied, and the rest of Pakistan has to withdraw due to international pressure.

On July 26, 1999, India successfully took back command on the High Outpost it lost to Pakistani intruders. Indians won the Kargil War after a two-month-long battle, thousands of soldiers died for this victory and protecting our country.

We salute the courageous brave hearts who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War.
