Teej is a major married women festival that celebrates Lord Shiva’s and Goddess Parvati‘s sacred union. Haryali Teej falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon) in Shravan month. According to the Georgian calendar, the festival falls in the month of July or August. Hariyali Teej is celebrated during the monsoon season when there is greenery all around.

In Sawan, when the whole earth is full of greenery, on the day of this fast, women swing, enjoy this festival by singing folk songs. On this day, fairs are held in many places in the country, and rides are taken out with the pomp of Mother Parvati.

Hariyali Teej is more closely celebrated across the northern and western parts of our country mainly in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat. When married women pray for the well-being of their husbands and unmarried girls pray to Lord Shiva and Parvati for a good life partner.

Hariyali Teej is also known as ‘Sindhara Teej’, and the name signifies the gifts and goodies the gifts to the daughter by her parents which usually contains henna, bangles, clothes, jewelry, makeup items, sweets. Hariyali Teej is also known as Chhoti Teej and Shravana Teej.

There is also the importance of applying mehndi on this day. Women and girls make different types of artwork on their hands. Alata, a sign of suhaag, is also applied on the feet.
