Chandra Shekhar Azad was the great and popular freedom fighter of the Indian freedom struggle, the man whom the British could never conquer. His fierce patriotism and courage inspired others of his generation to enter the freedom struggle.
Chandra Shekhar Azad was famously known as Azad which means “Free”. Young Azad was terribly moved by the Britishers killing thousands of innocent Indians at Jhalianwala Bagh in Punjab. He wholeheartedly plunged into the freedom struggle.
When Mahatma Gandhi started Non-Cooperation in 1921 he joined it merely at age of 15 and ended up getting arrested. When presented to the courtroom before the magistrate and asked about his personal details he said his name is “Azad” (The Free), his father’s name is “Swatantrata” (Independence) and his residence is “Jail”. This incident made him popular and people started addressing him as “Azad”. On this, the judge sentenced him to 15 whips in public.
He was suspended from the Non-Cooperation Movement and took the revolutionary route after that. He was the active member and chief strategist in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and was involved in incidents like the 1925 Kakori Train Robbery, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy’s train in 1926. He was lastly involved in the shooting of J.P. Saunders at Lahore in 1928 to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai. He was a close associate of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and others and transformed the HRA into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) in 1928.
On 27 February 1931, an informant tipped the police about Azad’s presence at Alfred Park in Allahabad. He had made a resolve never to be captured alive. When he had all but one bullet left, he shot himself dead.
