National Bird Day

National Bird Day

National bird day is observed on 5th January by nature lovers, bird lovers, and bird watchers across the country to celebrate Birds. It is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the colorful and intriguing birds that people see out and about every day.

History

In January 2002 Avian Welfare Coalition and Born Free USA establishes January 5th as National Bird Day, a day of action and education for captive birds. The annual campaign aims to reduce the suffering of birds by raising public awareness of the destructive bird trade, the realities of cruel bird breeding mills, and ways to improve the welfare of birds already in captivity.

Threats to the well-being of wild and captive birds include:

  • illegal trade practices of birds,
  • avian diseases,
  • habitat loss due to climate change and human interference, and
  • lack of public awareness of bird conservation practices

How To Celebrate National Bird Day

This year on National Bird Day, you should celebrate all birds with open eyes and hearts. Take the time to notice the birds that live in your neighborhood, research their roles in your local ecosystem, and learn about their quirks. You could also build or decorate a birdhouse, put up bird feeders, or invest in binoculars on this #NationalBirdDay

National Bird Day Pledge

On National Bird Day I acknowledge that, today many of the world’s birds are threatened with extinction due to pressures from the pet trade, habitat loss, and climate change and that each year, millions of birds are captured from the wild or produced in captivity for commercial profit or human amusement, only to languish in conditions that fail to meet their instinctive behavioral and physical needs.

The survival and well-being of the world’s birds depend upon public education and support.

Therefore, in honor of National Bird Day observed on January 5th each year, I pledge to:

  • Educate myself and others on the plight of birds in captivity and the wild.
  • Take time to appreciate and observe wild birds in their natural habitat either at home or abroad.
  • Support conservation organizations working to protect wild birds and reputable bird rescues and sanctuaries that are caring for victims of the pet trade.
  • Spread the information at www.nationalbirdday.org on social media
