International Literacy Day – September 8

International Literacy Day (ILD) is celebrated on September 8th worldwide since 1967 to promote literacy and raise awareness globally on literacy issues.

ILD advocate for a literate world supports literacy educators and leaders and celebrates the power of literacy. The main aim is to highlight the importance of literacy as a matter of human rights and advance society towards a more literate and sustainable society.

On 26 October 1966 UNESCO in its 14th General conference declared 8 September as international literacy day which is now a part of the UN’s sustainable development goals program, highlight the need for changes and improvements to be made worldwide in literacy development.

UNESCO says, “Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace, and democracy.

Now International Literacy Day is celebrated worldwide, bringing together governments, multi- and bilateral organizations, NGOs, private sectors, communities, teachers, learners, and experts in the field. On this day also International Literacy Prizes are awarded to people with outstanding solutions that can drive literacy towards achieving the 2030 Education Agenda.

The theme for this year’s International Literacy Day is ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces‘.

According to the UN International, Literacy Day is an opportunity for Governments, civil society, and stakeholders to highlight improvements in world literacy rates, and reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges.

How to Celebrate International Literacy Day

1. Go to a library and get involved.

2. Participate in the International Literacy Day event.

3. Appreciate your teachers who had played a major role in ensuring the literacy of our citizens.

4. Help students with their reading, volunteer to help tutor students who are struggling with grammar, language, or other relevant subjects.

5. Make a donation to the International Literacy Association. Your donation will help people across the globe to improve their literacy rates.
