Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was the ninth Sikh Guru who followed the path laid down by the first Guru Nanak. He was born on 1st April 1621, in Amritsar. The birth anniversary of a Guru is known as Parkash Purab or Parkash Utsav. His great work and views on humanity have made the followers remember his birthday and celebrate the same grandly.

This year 2024 will mark as 402nd birth anniversary of the Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is known for his sacrifice for the protection of Hindus against a 17th-century law that forced them to convert to Islam. In 1675 Mughal ruler Aurangzeb asked him to accept Islam and beheaded him for not accepting Islam. The 115 verses composed by him are included in Guru Granth Sahib.

Gurdwara Sheesh Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib commemorate the places where Guruji was killed and where his last rites were performed. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib’s place in world history is unique among those who sacrificed their lives to protect religion and human values, ideals, and principles.

Guruji’s sacrifice was not only for the practice of religion but for the entire human cultural heritage. He dedicated his whole life to spreading Guru Nanak’s message, he visited many places in India where now many gurudwaras or shrines have been built to honor him.

His birth anniversary is celebrated with zest and enthusiasm. Followers sing bhajans, kirtan, and devotional songs, they share his teaching and words through the community. Processions are carried out at various places and special events are organized on this day. Guru Tegh Bahadur is indeed the ideal example of humility, piety, and compassion. His ideas are reflected through his life and poetical composition.
