Bonalu festival is dedicated to Kali, goddess of destruction symbolizes the unique culture of Telangana, is celebrated with traditional fervor and gaiety in Telangana. Bonalu is celebrated in the month of Ashada when people pray that the rains will be good, the crops will grow and everyone will be happy.

Bonalu Jathara is a month-long festival and incorporates colorful parades and community feasts. On this celebration day, people wake up early than the regular schedule and complete their daily activities. Goddess Shakti is worshiped as Mahakali or Mahankali. There are different names for Goddess Shakti or Kali in various regions namely “Maisamma, Pochamma, Yellamma, Peddamma, Dokkalamma, Ankalamma, Poleramma, Maremma, Pochamma, Maremma, Yellamma, Nookalamma” and so forth.

Women dress in their best and carry vessels filled with rice, jaggery, milk, and curd and secured with neem leaves and a light set on it on their heads, as offering to the Goddess. Besides drum sounds the women reach the temple dancing on her own with family, neighbors, relatives and offer Bonam to the goddess. During the month-long festival, people also hold ‘rangam’ or forecasting the future, organize processions and cultural events.

Women queue up at the temples to offer Bonalu, which consists of cooked rice, jaggery, curd, and turmeric water, carried in steel and clay pots on their heads. The devotees believe that the annual festival will ward off evil and usher in peace.
